PARTICIPATORY RESOURCE MAPPING PROGRAMME IN 90 PANCHAYATS AND THREE MUNICIPALITIES IN KERALA

Funding Agency: Grama Panchayats, Block Panchayats and Municipalities

The project was to prepare Resource Maps of 90 Panchayats and 3 Municipalities in the State. It was intended to collect the nature of resource base of each panchayat and map it in cadastral scale (1:5000) scale, which shows the resource, landuse, water resource and assets which are collected and mapped on panchayat basis. The activities included field mapping and data collection, preparation of thematic maps, socio economic data analysis and report preparation. The field mapping was carried out with the help of trained local volunteers. In Municipalities, Urban Information System by using the Resource Maps was prepared. The maps generated through Participatory Resource Mapping are very helpful for management of future development activities and are useful for effective spatial planning and sustainable resource management and preventive management measures like flood & drought control. Participation of local inhabitants is ensured and they are trained for the purpose. Community participation helps them to understand the strength and weakness of the resource available in the particular area. This understanding will be helpful for the future planning and the implementation of the local level developments.
