INITIAL ENVIRONMENTAL EXAMINATION OF COMPREHENSIVE WATER SUPPLY SCHEME TO ALAPPAD, CLAPPANA, KARUNAGAPALLY AND OACHIRA

Funding Agency: Kerala Water Authority, Government of Kerala

The Kerala Water Authority is implementing Comprehensive Water Supply Schemes in the Tsunami affected coastal panchayats. Though interim arrangements like supply of water through tanker Lorries, renovation of tube wells, etc., were done on war footing, quality as well as quantity still remains a matter of grave concern. For a permanent solution to the drinking water needs of these areas, two comprehensive piped water supply schemes one covering Alappad, Karunagappally, Clappana and Oachira panchayats and another covering Kayamkulam Municipality and Arattupuzha panchayat having a reliable surface source have been conceived by the KWA, which will be financed by Asian Development Bank.

The present report contain the details of the IEE carried out, the major impacts to be expected, the mitigation measures suggested and also the Environmental Management Plan for the project area. The report is arranged in such a way that the chapter I gives an Introduction to the project, IEE etc., the chapter II describes the Proposed Water Supply Project, chapter III, Description of the Environment, chapter IV Potential Environmental Impacts, chapter V Impact Prediction Matrices and Mitigation measures and chapter VI Institutional Requirements and Environment Monitoring Plan.
