ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES OF CORPORATION OF KOCHI

The overall objective of the present study was to identify the environmental problems and issues in the Cochin Corporation area and to suggest recommendations for environment management. The specific objectives were to identify the Ecologically and Environmentally Sensitive Zones, to conduct a study on the existing canal systems, to conduct a study on the existing lung spaces – parks and playgrounds, to conduct a random assessment on the pollution problems – Air, Water and Noise, to identify the overall environmental problems and issues and to formulate recommendations for environment management. The study provides information on the present Status of the Environment of Cochin City. Suggestions included sustainable land use planning with due consideration for protecting environment and biodiversity and measures to be taken for controlling air, water and noise pollution. The major suggestions could be included in the Master Plan for the City.

A two-pronged approach and strategy was adopted for the environmental study as part of the Preparation of Master Plan for Cochin City, which is Conservation, Development and Management of Natural Resources and the related environmental infrastructure and services in a manner that would lead to optimization of use of natural resources and reduction/abatement of pollution and also with a view to enhance their environmental value. The study comprised Coastal Regulatory Zones and Mangroves, Cochin Backwaters, Lowlands and Paddy fields, The canal System of Cochin, Pollution Issues including Air, Noise and Water Pollution, Solid Waste, Sewerage, Slums and Environmental Issues due to High Rise Buildings. Development and preservation of open spaces, lung spaces, greens and landscape, recreational areas, heritage sites etc. The study comprised Parks and Green Spaces and Heritage Sites.
