ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDIES OF THE PROPOSED FISHERY HARBOUR AT CHERUVATHUR AND CHETWAI

Funding Agency: Harbour Engineering Department, Govt. of Kerala

The Government of Kerala has proposed two new fishing harbours, one at Cheruvathur, adjacent to the existing Neeleswaram Fish Landing Centre (FLC) and other at Chettuva adjacent to the existing Chettuva Fish Landing Centre (FLC). The Harbour Engineering Department prepared detailed plan for the construction and maintenance of the proposed harbour and IIT Madras conducted model studies in both areas.

The objectives of the study were to analyse the project report based on the components and identify activities that can have considerable effect on the local environment – be it positive or negative, to foresee and quantify the magnitude and intensity of the impacts of the various harbour components on the local environment, to carry out an appraisal of the present environmental settings in the area with regard to parameters like land, water quality, biodiversity of the region, socio-economic conditions of the people, infrastructural capabilities of the area etc, to suggest mitigative / control measures for the major impacts of the harbour on the area and also to prepare an Environmental Management Plan for the harbour area. Technical programmes included the primary and secondary data collection and impact prediction and assessment and management plan.
