Coastal systems are under constant pressure from short and long-term natural influences, including erosion or sea level rise due to climate change, and from human endeavours. As a means to identify the potential for change, sustainability and adaptation, coastal systems research provides the tools, assessments and scenarios for managing this vulnerable landscape. The focus of attention of this Program Area is on interactive systems, both human and physical, studies related to mangrove ecosystem, coastal wetlands, coastal ecologically sensitive areas, modeling and EIA studies of fishing harbours, evaluation of coastal environmental projects, climate change and sea-level rise, estuarine resources, coastal tourism and shoreline development, coastal recreation, and coastal zone management.
