The R&D mission of CED is to focus research on natural resources which is critical for conservation and management. The focal theme include scale, patterns, and causes of degradation or loss of natural resources, spatial distribution and impacts of habitat change, conservation planning, pressures on biodiversity, sustainable models of natural resource use and appropriate policy and institutional frameworks for conservation and improved livelihoods. As a R&D institution functioning in Kerala, one of the biodiversity rich regions of the country, CED bears the responsibility for providing innovative solution to resolve the issues in environment and development, at a cost affordable to the State’s economy. The overall purpose of R&D activities of CED is to broaden the knowledge-base on environmental sciences in the country - in its economic, technological, social, political and ecological aspects - from a broad inter- disciplinary perspective to gain insights and to disseminate the knowledge so gathered.
