The R&D mission of CED is to focus research on natural resources,such as land, water and bioresources,studies related to sanitation,health and hygiene,solid waste and wastewater management,integrated river basin management,wetland studies, spatial distribution and impacts of habitat change, conservation planning,  sustainable models of natural resource use and appropriate policy and institutional frameworks for conservation and improved livelihoods. As a R&D institution functioning in Kerala, one of the biodiversity rich regions of the country, CED shares the responsibility for providing innovative solution to resolve the issues in environment and development, at a cost affordable to the State’s economy.

The overall purpose of R&D activities of CED is to broaden the knowledge-base on environmental sciences in the country - in its economic, technological, social, political and ecological aspects - from a broad inter- disciplinary perspective to gain insights and to disseminate the knowledge so gathered.
